Airbus Defence and Space develops In-Situ-Resource-Utilization (ISRU) technologies to explore and extract resources on the lunar surface to provide the basis for a sustainable lunar presence of humans on the Moon. The ROXY process is the technological basis for oxygen extraction from regolith. As a first step, small-scale terrestrial and lunar demonstrators are under development. The next step will aim at scaling of the ROXY technology to pilot plant levels.

Your tasks and responsibilities

Thermal tradeoffs to support conception and performance analysis of a scaled ROXY process as part of an interdisciplinary study to develop and characterize a design concept of a scaled ROXY facility based on the Mini-ROXY concept. The study team will include scientists, system engineers, mechanical engineers and designers from Airbus and academic partners.

The thermal analysis and design process always results in exciting tasks for students of the following disciplines, among others: mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, automation engineering or computer science. Basic thermodynamic and engineering knowledge is helpful for working on the following topics:

 

·       literature research for thermal products, new approaches and new ways of analysis

·       familiarisation with standard thermal analysis tools like SYSTEMA or ESATAN

·       familiarisation with ISRU processes and technology roadmaps

·       Updating existing thermal models (GMM & TMM)

·       Perform TCS trade-offs in co-operation with other disciplines

·       Perform TCS analysis evaluation

·       Contribution to integrated planning of the project

·       Contribution to overall project coordination

·       Consolidation of TCS results and preparation of a final TCS design concept

·       Documentation of the results, contribution to publication of the results at a conference and/or in a peer-reviewed journal

 Desired skills and qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of space- and aerospace, mechanical engineering, physics or an equivalent field of study.

  • First practical experience in the field of thermal engineering is desirable.

  • Fluent English.

The thesis/internship is planned for a six month period, and shall be performed in the “Thermal Systems & Products Germany” department of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The student is responsible for supervision and acceptance of his work by the university. Circulation of results of the work to other institutions than the university needs permission of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH.
