Your role:

Nanotechnology is a new and exciting research area that will create new materials and devices with a vast range of possible applications (e. g. electronics, medicine, biomaterials). The understanding and analytical characterization of nanomaterials is a precondition for the understanding of the nanomaterials (both for its intended use and possible side effects).

Central Analytical Services offers analytical services to internal customers at Merck and one of these services involves the thorough characterization of small particles (from the millimetre down to the nanometre range including nanomaterials). The samples come from various sources of the international Merck Group, e.g. pharmaceutical products, chemical products and samples from the many innovative Research and Development projects of Merck.

Your job will be the preparation of these small particles as well as the characterization of these samples by various analytical methods (e.g. dynamic light scattering, optical and electron microscopy, laser diffraction, analytical centrifugation and different spectroscopic methods). In addition you will take part in the evaluation, testing and establishment of new analytical procedures and methods for an improved characterization of the nanomaterials.

Duration: At least 6 months, starting March 2017


Who you are:
  • Current student of chemistry, physics or analytical sciences in the second half of your studies
  • You show initiative and very good organizational and communication skills
  • A broad knowledge of instrumental analytical methods and Computer skills are required
  • Excellent spoken and written German and/or English is imperative.
